As the country gears up for the harmonised elections slated for 23 August 23, 2023, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has set out mechanisms that citizens can use when their electoral rights are violated.
When a person’s electoral rights have been violated, he/she can lodge a complaint with the ZHRC:
In terms of the Constitution of Zimbabwe as read with the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission Act Chapter [10: 30], the ZHRC has a mandate to promote, protect and enforce human rights in Zimbabwe.
You can contact the Commission on:
Hotlines: +263786 602 035
+263 771 838 65476,
263 780 051 684
Email: info@zhrc.org.zw
Once the ZHRC receives a complaint within its mandate, the following can take place:
The Commission conducts an investigation that includes taking all the details, interviewing all relevant sources of information including witnesses.
The Commission secures appropriate redress including suitable action where human rights have been violated
The Commission can recommend the prosecution of violators of human rights
Other mechanisms for addressing election-related violations:
Reporting promptly to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for criminal violations to facilitate investigations, evidence collection and enable criminal court processes. During elections, the ZRP establishes Special Investigations Committees to investigate cases of electoral violations.
If the aggrieved party is not satisfied with the services rendered by the police, he or she can lodge a complaint with ZHRC.
One can also directly approach the Electoral Court for redress on doctoral matters.
In the case of the administration of elections, one may report to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
During elections, ZEC establishes Multi-party Liaison Committee and Media Monitoring Committee that handle electoral-related violations.
One may also report to other Commissions or Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) that deal with Human Rights issues.
