CLAIM: BCC and informal traders are working on MoU
The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) and informal traders in the second largest city of the country are working on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) set to help the two parties work together amicably.
Below is an update on progress made so far towards the signing of the special agreement between the local authority and the informal sector:
· According to a recent BCC report the Acting Director of Town Planning Department gave a report (15th September, 2021) sought to appraise Council on the progress of the drafting of MOU with Informal Traders Association, hereinafter, referred to as ITAs.
· Council (4th August 2021) approved the drafting of the MOU with all registered ITAs in Bulawayo. Since then the draft MOU was circulated to all Council departments for input.
· We then received feedback from departments by the 3rd of September 2021.
· This culminated into a feedback meeting with ITAs on the 7th of September 2021 at Rainbow Hotel (Bulawayo) where the Chamber Secretary – Legal Section and Town Planning – Estates/ Vending attended. ITAs welcomed the submissions made by the Local Authority with a few additions being made to make the document water tight.
· ITAs then requested to go and engage with other ITAs that had not attended so as to ensure inclusivity.
· A full comprehensive draft report would be submitted to Council in due course.
· Council then resolved to recommend that the report be received and noted.
