Claim: The Registrar General’s office is issuing National Identity Cards at Pumula Police Station, Emakhandeni Primary School and Mpilo Central Hospital.
A message circulating on social media stated that National IDs are being issued at the aforementioned centres.
CITE visited the stations and made the following observations:
Pumula Police Station – Issuance is actually being done at the Pumula housing office which is adjacent to the police station. An officer from the Registrar General’s office who was manning the office confirmed that the registration process is ongoing but the machines are currently down and will resume as soon as the machines get fixed.
Emakhandeni Primary School – Staff from the school said the office which had been set up there was shut down several years ago. They said the office, while operational, was only issuing birth certificates for children under the age of five.
Mpilo Central Hospital – Security staff at Mpilo explained that the RG office stationed there attends to a limited number of people during the week.
“You will have to come here early morning and get a number. The people at the office will then tell you on which day to come because they take a limited number of people,” said one of the officers.
